Club had 28 swimmers taking part in 122 events

 

The Clonmel club’s ladies team that competed on the second day – Anna Hickman, Erin Keane, Lucy Brannigan, Eibhlis Bartley, Lucy O’Mahony, Blaithnaid Keane, Isabelle Hoare and Jenna Hayes

Clonmel Swimming Club participated at the Munster Long Course Swimming Championships at University of Limerick from Friday to Sunday, May 10-12.

The club had a total of 28 swimmers who had qualified to take part in 122 events during the three-day event. Nine of these swimmers were in the junior age category (13-14 years).

On Day 1, Friday night the following swimmers progressed to the finals: Blaithnaid Keane and Caroline Smith in 50 metres Freestyle, Jenna Hayes in 100 metres Breaststroke and 50 metres Freestyle, Victoria Szyszkowska in 200 metres Butterfly and 100 metres Breaststroke.

Also qualifying were Sean Kelly in 200 metres Breaststroke, Ethan Hanrahan in 200 metres Breaststroke and 100 metres Backstroke, Garry Hanrahan in 200 metres Freestyle and 200 metres Individual Medley, Owen Killen in 100 metres Backstroke and 200 metres Freestyle, David Killen in 100 metres Backstroke and Killian Whelan in 200 metres Breaststroke.

The club had three medal winners on Day 1 with Caroline Smith claiming gold, Victoria Szyszkowska winning silver and Garry Hanrahan claiming a bronze medal.

On Day 2, Saturday, the following Clonmel swimmers progressed to the finals:Blaithnaid Keane in 50 metres Backstroke, Erin Keane in 50 metres Breaststroke, Jenna Hayes in 50 metres Backstroke and 200 metres Freestyle and Victoria Szyszkowska in 400 metres Individual Medley.

Also qualifying were Sean Kelly in 100 metres Breaststroke and 100 metres Freestyle final, Ethan Hanrahan in 400 metres Individual Medley and 100 metres Breaststroke, Garry Hanrahan in 100 metres Freestyle, David Killen in 50 metres Backstroke, Owen Killen and Killian Whelan in 100 metres Breaststroke.

Owen and Victoria added to the silverware tally with a bronze medal each.

On Day 3, Sunday, the Clonmel club had a large group of swimmers competing on the last day of this event and again many swimmers progressed to the finals, including Eibhlis Bartley, Lucy Brannigan, Niamh Smith, Anna Hickman and Erin Keane, who all progressed to finals in the 200 metres Breaststroke; Jenna Hayes in the 200 metres Backstroke, Caroline Smith in the 100 metres Freestyle and 200 metres Individual Medley and Victoria Szyszkowska in the 200 metres Individual Medley and 200 metres Breaststroke.

Also qualifying were Ethan Hanrahan in the 200 metres Backstroke, Garry Hanrahan in the 50 metres Freestyle and 100 metres Butterfly, Sean Kelly in the 50 metres Freestyle, David Killen in the 200 metres Backstroke, Owen Killen in the 200 metres Backstroke and 50 metres Freestyle and Killian Whelan in the 50 metres Breaststroke.

Caroline Smith won a gold and Garry Hanrahan a silver medal on the night.

Three Clonmel relay teams also took part over the weekend. This is always an exciting part of any swimming festival, and it certainly did not disappoint.

On Friday night we had the Boys Over 15 400 metres Medley Relay team of David, Killian, Garry and Thomas, and the Boys Under 14 400 Metres Medley Relay team of Ethan, Sean, Toby and Owen, who finished fourth.

On the final night of this event, the Mixed Under 14 Medley Relay team of Ethan, Victoria, Caroline and Sean were third, winning bronze medals.

This was such a super finish to three days of intense swimming. The club congratulates all its swimmers on their wonderful achievements.

Many of these swimmers will now go on to represent the club in July at the Irish Summer Nationals in Limerick (Junior) and Dublin (Senior age category).

The club thanks the parents for helping each day with the many roles assigned to them, but most of all they thank the coaches, Niamh Whelan and Loreto Killen, who have been coaching and mentoring the swimmers all year preparing them for these prestigious events.
